The Solution: Ground Power Support System (GPSS)
A GPSS is an external stationary energy system
that performs the function of the aircraft’s auxiliary
power unit or ‘APU’ for an aircraft on the ground
when docked at the terminal. The GPSS provides the
aircraft with electrical power and preconditioned air.
The energy consumption and emissions of a GPSS unit
are substantially lower (between 70 and 90 per cent)
than that of an APU. The same holds true for noise
levels where levels as low as 30 dB(A) can be expected
from a GPSS unit.
GPSS operation
Electrical power and preconditioned air are provided
as part of a unitised system. Note: The use of electric
power alone has been found to be uneconomical from
both an environmental and an efficiency standpoint.
